Blueberries

Ingredient

Blueberries

Vaccinium Myrtillus

Benefits

Natural

Blueberries are high in vitamins A, C, and E, which are antioxidants that are said to help protect the skin from damage and also help to promote cell repair and growth, rejuvenating the skin and giving a gorgeous glow. They are also an excellent source of essential fatty acids, which help to regulate moisture, while their high tannin content gives them antiseptic qualities.

Lush buy blueberries from a farm in Dorset, where they are handpicked daily from June to September and whisked straight to the factory, where they are mulched into products. However, as the UK season is so short, it does mean the blueberries have to be frozen for use outside of harvesting time, so the berries are fast-frozen as soon as they are freshly picked. Blueberries, unlike other fresh ingredients, still perform the same when frozen: they retain their colour, nutrients and their scrumptious plumpness.

The freezing of the blueberries is done in order to reduce the need, where possible, to fly soft fruit in, allowing the support of a local business all year round while also giving Lush the chance to be sure of the growing conditions, and know that they will arrive ripe and in perfect condition.
