Stemming from an exotic flower, passion fruits are believed to have been first described by Spanish missionaries of South America in the early 16th century, who saw in the flower symbolic references to the Passion of the Christ and named the plant after it.

The family Passifloraceae includes many climbing plants producing flowers of an incredibly complex beauty and sometimes round, egg-shaped fruits, which can have various colours and tastes. Lush uses the purple passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), a delicious delicacy native to South America.
