Vanilla is the unmistakable, uplifting and sweet scent we all know and love.

Vanilla beans (pods) are the dried unripe fruits of the orchid Vanilla planifolia. Native to tropical America, it can grow in most tropical areas near the Equator. Every flower is pollinated by hand and pollination must occur within a few hours of the flower's opening. Each blossom produces a single bean that is normally harvested after eight or nine months and then passes through a complex curing process before resembling the black-brown fragrant spice we all know.&nbsp;

Vanillin, the main aromatic compound within vanilla, is an antioxidant and contributes to restoring the skin's brightness and softness.&nbsp;

Sourcing vanilla has been a struggle during the past decades, due to the great demand and price increases which lead to smuggling, quality issues and shortage. But at Lush, we love the beans so much that we couldn't stop using them. We thus had to find solutions, years by years and months by months, thanks to our dedicated team of creative buyers. Benzoin has been used in incense and perfumes across the world for centuries, as its sweet, spicy and earthy aroma brings comfort and calms the mind.

Benzoin is a natural resin that can be collected from two types of styrax trees: Styrax benzoin, native to Sumatra, and Styrax tonkinensis, which grows in Southeast Asia. Although often referred to as gums, resins are slightly different, as they contain many more essential oils and are not soluble in water. When they're injured, it flows off tree trunks and hardens with air exposure, like a bandage protecting the tree from disease. Once collected, the hard resin can be ground into a powder or refined with solvents to make a scented extract called a resinoid.

Lush purchases a tincture of benzoin from a UK-based company and resinoid from a supplier in Laos. The latter works with 80 farmers who collect resin from Styrax tonkinensis trees, using traditional methods and focusing on quality. The trees are grown and harvested sustainably, and the forest is managed according to agroforestry principles. Farmers receive fair payments and labour security and safety.

Dare we say, the most relaxing scent you’ll ever smell!

The plant genus Lavandula includes about 47 species of flowering plants. Most famous for ornaments and fragrant extracts is the Lavandula angustifolia species, from which Lush’s lavender oil and absolute are obtained. It is a shrub-like perennial that grows long, slender stems topped with a cluster of purple flowers - small yet very fragrant.

René-Maurice Gattefossé, a French chemist from the early 20th century, accidentally discovered lavender oil's soothing and healing properties. Legend has it that he severely burned his hands during tests in his laboratory and immediately immersed them in lavender oil (which was nearest to him at the time). His hands healed so well that he became passionate about the properties of essential oils, and is now recognised as the ‘father of modern aromatherapy’.

Lush sources lavender oils from a French distiller based in the warm and sunny region of Provence. We also purchase dried strands which may have different origins depending on the manufacturing site where your product was made.
